Your San Francisco City Hall Elopement Guide

Eloping at San Francisco City Hall is a dream come true for so many couples. With its stunning architecture, rich history, and being an iconic location, it makes sense why this venue is a popular choice for intimate weddings and elopements. As a local San Francisco photographer, I’m here to walk you through everything you need to know to make your celebration at City Hall a seamless and memorable experience. From the best photo spots to booking the perfect ceremony location, I’ve got you covered.

How to Elope at San Francisco City Hall: Your Step-by-Step Guide

1. Make a Reservation

First you’ll want to make a reservation. San Francisco City Hall offers two types of ceremonies: the standard civil ceremony and the one-hour private ceremony on the fourth floor or the Mayor’s Balcony. If possible, I always recommend trying for the Mayor’s Balcony first as this is the most private space and has such stunning lighting. But booking in advance is going to be essential as slots fill up quickly, especially for the more private locations.

You’ll want to obtain your marriage license ahead of time, make sure both parties are there when picking it up. And arrive at City Hall at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time to check in.

2. The Best Photo Spots

Really, I would say trust in your photographer and let them take the lead with photo spots. They are going to know the area well and know which spots may be less crowded or have the best lighting. But also definitely let them know if you already have an idea of spots you’d love to be photographed in so they can make a mental note and ensure they capture everything you’re dreaming of!

Here are some of the top spots to consider

  • The Grand Staircase: located just inside the main entrance, one of the most iconic spots for wedding photos.
  • The Fourth Floor Gallery: beautiful light and fewer crowds, a more intimate environment for capturing photos.
  • The Third Floor Hallway: long corridors lined with beautiful large windows, perfect for capturing romantic and candid shots strolling along hand in hand.
  • The Elevators: The vintage elevators at City Hall are another unique photo spot. The ornate design and classic feel of the elevators add a touch of old-world charm to your wedding photos, making for both stylish and intimate shots.

3. Tips For A Smooth Elopement

City Hall is a bustling place, often filled with other couples, photographers, and tourists. To ensure a smooth experience, allocate plenty of time for your ceremony and photos. Walking between different locations within City Hall can take longer than expected, especially if you want to capture photos in multiple spots.

  • Be Prepared to Share The Space: with all of the beautiful and desirable locations in City Hall it’s super important to understand that you will be sharing the space with other couples and their photographers. Patience and flexibility are key to making the most of the experience and being respectful of everyone else who is there to use the space as well
  • Book the Fourth Floor for More Privacy: If privacy is important to you definitely consider booking the fourth floor for your ceremony. Not only will your ceremony be private, but you’ll have plenty of opportunity to take couples portraits here afterwards too. It’s also the best lighting in the entire building (but I’m biased)
  • Trust Your Photographer: A photographer familiar with San Francisco City Hall will know the best spots and the most efficient ways to photograph you and your honey. Trusting your photographer allows you to relax and enjoy your special day, knowing they will capture beautiful, timeless images efficiently without any unnecessary delays.
